Where does it come from?
Spirulina grows naturally in shallow equatorial lakes such as in the Rift Valley in East Africa and in Mexico. It is normally found in volcanic areas as it thrives on high soda conditions. Spirulina is the food gathered by flamingos, and gives them all their nutrient requirement.
Although wild grown spirulina has been traditionally gathered and consumed by native peoples for centuries, for purity and safety it's best grown with aquaculture in shallow ponds. Spirulina is now grown in many countries including India and China, but because of unique environmental conditions and state of the art growing and processing, the highest quality spirulina is produced by Cyanotech Corp. at Kona, Hawaii.
Cyanotech is located right on the ocean shore at Kona on the big island of Hawaii.
